Accidents involving reversing vehicles and children hit the news on a far-too-regular basis. It’s every parent’s worst nightmare – and tragically it happens almost every week in Australia. Usually it is the parent, family member or a friend behind the wheel. It happens in an instant, even if the child is thought to be in a safe place.
Virtually every car has a large blind spot at the rear that makes small children invisible when behind the car, even when several metres behind the vehicle. It’s not just large 4WDs either (although these are involved in proportionately more accidents), some of the biggest blind spots are in compact sedans and hatches.
You can check your own car’s rear visibility with the NRMA’s Reversing Visibility Index.
1) Take action:
2) Get a reversing camera:
Reversing cameras can be installed for under $500 and reversing sensors for under $270 – it’s a very wise investment considering what they can save. Remember though, a reversing camera is no substitute for proper care and vigilance.
