Reversing Safety - Prevent Disaster in Your Driveway

 

Almost every week there is another shocking story in the news about an accident involving reversing cars and kids. The stats are scary:

- Behind the family pool, a reversing car is the #1 cause of accidental death for kids at home

- One child a week is run over in their own driveway, and three a week are hurt in low speed roll-overs

- Family or friends are most likely to be behind the wheel

The problem is bad enough for the US to consider making reversing cameras mandatory in all vehicles by 2014.

Here are four quick tips to reversing safely in your driveway:

1) Never reverse your car without ensuring your children are safe and are being supervised away from the driveway. Even if you think they are safe, if they are unsupervised they are potentially at risk.

2) If in doubt, put them in the car with you. It may take longer, but it guarantees their safety.

  

3) Teach driveway safety. Your children need to be aware of the risks. You won't always be there to look after them, they need to be safe at friends' houses, at the shops etc.

 

4) Have a reversing camera installed for just $499, and even better, have reversing sensors installed as well for additional, auditory warnings.

 

Remember though, a reversing camera is no substitute for parental care and vigilance.
